Playing The Prelude

Seven days ago, I walked onto the platform at my home church as a soloist for the first time in a little over ten years. I had asked to play the prelude on the piano before our two blended morning services and the music pastor graciously allowed me the opportunity.

For ten minutes I played classic hymns like Victory In Jesus, At Calvary and In The Garden along with some of my favorite worship songs You Are My All In All and He Knows My Name. It was such a blessing to play the grand piano in the newly remodeled 1,300 seat auditorium and hope it was as much a blessing to those who listened as it was for me to play.

Here’s the amazing thing to me. The last time I played as a soloist in the morning services at the church was the Sunday before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I played the song during the service Getting Ready To Leave This World. The choir that morning sang a song called We Are United. Many times I’ve thought about how the Lord must have directed those two songs to be done the Sunday before everyone in America would be thinking about what happens after we die and then unite together as one nation under God. Fast forward ten years later in the morning service, I once again played and the choir once again sang We Are United!

I received compliments about my short time of playing last week and several told me they have been wanting to hear me play again during (or before) the services. It’s a great reminder that God can use a small thing not in the spotlight of a service to encourage and minister to others. Find your gift no matter how small or insignificant you may think it is and use it to encourage others. You may be surprised at the results!
